Relief from Dystonia
Ah, yes… dystonia. That special joy- filled experience that comes with the wearing off of PD meds.
Usually, in addition to what I jokingly call the “wiggles”, I also get painful cramps in my left leg, as one muscle works against the other, visibly contracting the muscles very painfully.
My Doc says it’s probably more painful for me because, as a former aggressive backpacker and, since I continue to exercise aggressively, my leg muscles are in very good shape.
Ah, well– I have discovered a combination of supplements that work to reduce the pain of wearing off dystonia by around 95%, when I remember to take it on time. It may not work for anyone else, but it’s inexpensive and may be worth a try.
After I tell you what it is, I’ll tell you my theory on why it works.
I usually take my last dose of Sinemet around 1:00pm– 1-1 1/2 tabs of Sinemet 10/100. By around 4:30, this will have pretty much worn off, so around 4:15, I take 1 B-100 Complex and a a “Triple Strength Lecithin.”
Seriously, that’s it– I usually feel a lessening in the dystonia within 5 minutes, and if I take it around 4:00, I can totally avoid almost all of the wearing off dystonia.
My theory is: B-6 has been thought to interfere with the absorption of L-Dopa in the brain, so taking the B-100 complex (which has 100 mg of B6) serves to cut off the absorbion & remaining effect from any L-Dopa lingering in my system.
Combine that impact with the Lecithin, which contains phosphatydylcholine, a precursor to acetlycholine. Acetlycholine is a neuro-transmitter that is important to have in balance with dopamine, somewhat like estrogen and progesterone need to be in balance for a woman to experience a less dramatic menopause.
By taking the Lecithin, I am boosting the amount of acetylcholine in my brain, which in turn brings more balance to the dopamine left in my brain, dramatically reducing the pain of wearing off dystonia.
Anyway, that’s my theory– and the important thing is that it works for me.
